What’s home health care & what should I expect?
What's home health care?Home health care is a wide range of health care services that can be given in your home for an illness or injury. Home health care is usually less expensive, more convenient, and just as effective as care you get in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF).
Examples of skilled home health services include:
If you get your Medicare benefits through a Medicare health plan, check with your plan to find out how it gives your Medicare-covered home health benefits.
If you have a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy or other health insurance coverage, tell your doctor or other health care provider so your bills get paid correctly.
If your doctor or referring health care provider decides you need home health care, they should give you a list of agencies that serve your area, but must tell you whether their organization has a financial interest in any agency listed.

What should I expect from my home health care?
- Doctor’s orders are needed to start care. Once your doctor refers you for home health services, the home health agency will schedule an appointment and come to your home to talk to you about your needs and ask you some questions about your health.
- The home health agency staff will also talk to your doctor about your care and keep your doctor updated about your progress.
- It’s important that home health staff see you as often as the doctor ordered.
- Check what you’re eating and drinking.
- Check your blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and breathing.
- Check that you’re taking your prescription and other drugs and any treatments correctly.
- Ask if you’re having pain.
- Check your safety in the home.
- Teach you about your care so you can take care of yourself.
- Coordinate your care. This means they must communicate regularly with you, your doctor, and anyone else who gives you care.
Home care and hospice are among the fastest growing healthcare sectors, particularly for the jobs market of nurses and nursing assistants. The dramatic change over the past few years is a result of the many forces including the 2013 Affordable Care Act and outcome-based quality improvement initiatives. The increased use of technology and advances in clinical medicine have had a significant impact on our industry. The consolidation of the healthcare industry takes advantage of the economies of scale and group purchasing programs and will continue to change the home care and home health care industry. The influence of the government and private and insititutional care is shifting our focus of car to the home or increasing emphasis on the home, encouraging us to provide the right care at the right place for the right amount of time. Community-based care is now in the limelight, and we need to take advantage of our time in the spotlight. The need for leadership resources to allow us to successfully manage and compete in today's fast-paced home care and hospice industry is crucial for success. Leaders need to be ready and informed to meet our industry's ever-changing unique challenges, which are intensified in an environment of technological advances.
Description of Home Health Care
The provision of home health care begins with the patient, the individual identified as requiring home health nursing or home therapy services. Although this identified individual is the focus of the home healthcare services, professionals goals for patient development are implemented in the context of family and community. The family, neighbors, and other members of the patient's informal support system generally provide the 24-hour care and support necessary during the patient's period of illness and dependency. Formal services from home health agencies or the community's social service network generally supplement what family and friends provide. The more dependent the patient, the greater the skill and commitment demanded from the informal care giving system. If family and friends are unable to provide adequate care, and patients require more intensive services than are available from the home health agency, consideration of nursing home, sheltered care, inpatient hospice, or other insititutional placement becomes critical. Social health maintenance organizations (HMOs), such as the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the elderly (PACE), may replace home health services with a comprehensive program that substitutes supervised maintenance in the community.
